Have some fun with literature!
Extraordinary literature classes across the city

If you're looking for something fun and meaningful to do this weekend, look out for literature tours!
You don't need to consult encyclopaedias or search for biographical details of our writers and poets at home. Others have done it for you! All you have to do is register, put away your sunglasses (or umbrella), your camera and put on a comfortable pair of shoes. J
From Spring to Autumn, the organisers offer countless literary walks, where in 2-3 hours, through the beautiful sites of Budapest, they reveal where and how our famous poets and writers lived. Who wouldn't be curious to know where Márton Karinthy's attic window looked out? Where is the famous DOOR, which, with Magda Szabó's novel, has forever inscribed itself in Hungarian and world literature? Which house did Kosztolányi move into after his marriage to Ilona Harmos? Or which of our poets was Ilona Tanner engaged to before she married Babits? Do you wonder what it feels like to linger between those walls and walk in the garden where Örkény finished “The Toth Family”? For me, these walks have become an unforgettable experience! J

The tours give you a huge amount of information through entertaining stories and personal aspects, while you can relax in the fresh air with good company.
  • In the 11th district, Anna Juhász, a literary writer, has taken on the task of leading the walks, and she now also runs literary adventures to Lake Balaton and the Danube Bend. Anna's enthusiasm quickly leaves its mark on the audience, and she is the one who is constantly building the bridge between the literary life of the past and the present, to pass on the treasures to the future. Once you have the opportunity to learn from her, you are guaranteed to be absorbed into this way of life.
  • In the 2nd district, you can walk with the Pestbuda team of promenades along the streets of Pasarét, where many of our literary heroes lived (not an exhaustive list: Antal Szerb, Magda Szabó, Lőrinc Szabó, Örkény, Tibor Déry)
  • In the Palace District, organized by Imagine Budapest, guided by FISZ literary historians, will take you to the places where Lőrinc Szabó, Pilinszky, Babits, Karinthy - and many others - lived.
  • Who better to guide you through the Krisztina Town and the Castle District with your literary stories than Anna Ott! There is a special atmosphere when you listen to Antal Szerb's strange stories in the Castle. You see, the cultural possibilities are many!
Look out for the literary walks even in October, and don't be discouraged if you missed the summer programmes, they'll all start up again in the spring season!
